The key to having and maintaining healthy eyes is in the early detection of potential problems. We are delighted to announce that we are now offering optomap® imaging. This investment in our practice offering allows us to see a much wider view of your retina than any other imaging device. This provides us with the best chance of earlier disease detection and treatment.
What is optomap®
Optomap was originally created to provide a patient-friendly way to capture images of children’s retinas after its founder’s, (Douglas Anderson OBE) five-year-old son went blind in one eye when a retinal detachment was detected too late. It has now been developed for adults too.
This ultra-quick and non-invasive procedure captures an instantaneous, ultra-widefield digital image of your retina. This gives us a view of your retina that was previously unavailable with former tests and adds to their ability to diagnose the health of your eyes.
“I am extremely pleased to offer this technology to my patients. optomap® provides us with a permanent digital image which I can manipulate and magnify to have the most comprehensive view of the back of the eye to better and more effectively discover abnormalities that may be present.”

How it helps us to manage your eye health
The sensitive tissue that makes up the retina is susceptible to a variety of diseases and it is essential to catch any problems early in their progression to avoid vision loss. In fact, many eye problems can develop without you noticing any change in your sight.
Fortunately, diseases or damage such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears can be seen with a thorough exam of the retina. It also helps us to diagnose diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, retinal holes, tears and detachments, malignant melanomas and many other retinal disorders.
With optomap®, in less than a second, we can generate a high-resolution, digital, colour image of your retina. This image becomes a part of your permanent medical record and enables us to see more of your retina, measure aspects of your eye, and magnify some of the finer details. It also allows us to track subtle changes in your eye over time by comparing optomap® images from previous years. For this reason, we thoroughly recommend that it becomes part of your regular eye examinations.
The procedure is performed quickly and easily in the pre-test area, enabling your optometrist to spend more time diagnosing and educating rather than gathering information.
